Have you ever seen a Press Box like this?

...neither has Northwest Ohio!
Montpelier's current Press Box is dedicated to the late Hip Klotz, but the reconstruction from the mid-1990s is in desparate need of an update.  So, almost immediately after we received the permit for the Storage Building, Dr. Grime called me to discuss the potential for a redo.  He said "Use your imagination..."  In this case, we have come up with a solution that is unique and interesting, but should cost about the same as a simple re-cladding and new roof for the existing building.

The project is simply the re-cladding of the existing building, using the same royal blue siding as has been used on other athletic structures in recent years.  We change the use of the siding by stretching the royal blue up and over the top of the building to form the roof and clad the field-side of the buiding in white (used on the roof of the other buildings).  The new structure provides a contemporary twist on the typical “shed” adopted by similar structures and dramatically changes the image of the Press Box.
The expanded shed provides for excellent signage potential and a much more interesting and attractive personality for one of the most high-profile structures in the school district.  We will start bid documents in the fall.
These are few sketches from 2010 - the basis for the design.  I intend to have a long-term positive impact on my community through, among other means, the built environment.  I want to make sure that Montpelier & Williams County get the most interesting and creative solutions.  I want this project, this building, to be unique in the region - without costing the community a fortune.  So...I am using my imagination.  :)

Thanks to Joel Hartman for his help on the existing drawings, and in the design and detailing!

  1. Looks pretty cool. What type of siding is the blue metal? From my experience, you'll want to think about the panel patterning ahead of time, because it usually reads more than expected.

  2. The material is the Multi-Rib system made by McElroy Metals - we get it from Marshall, Michigan. (http://www.mcelroymetal.com)
Nothing fancy - actually intended for barns, etc. but it matches and, I think, will provide a great aesthetic on that scale.
